Variations
- 1hariyanuvāni – hariyanuvāri - From the wordings of CharaNa 4, where Sri Thyagaraja uses the word ‘nī’ (Your), it is obvious that the Kriti is addressed to his mind. Therefore, ‘vāni’ seems to be more appropriate.
- 5balimi – balimin : balimi - seems to be appropriate.
Commentary
- 2malayani – This is how it is given in all the books. In some books, this has been translated as ‘useless’; in other books, as ‘discordant’. However, both meanings are not available in the dictionary. The root word seems to be ‘malagu’ or ‘malugu’ meaning ‘bend’. It has accordingly been translated.
- 3mata – ṣaṇmata - worship of – viṣṇu, śiva, śakti, sūrya, gaṇapati, kumāra.
- 4śuka mukha – this may be translated as 'Suka and other important persons’; however, as Srimad-Bhagavatam was propounded by sage Suka, this has been translated as ‘from the very mouth of sage Suka’.
- 6nī japamuna hṛdayamu vēga rājillanu jēsina – the word ‘nī’ would refer to the mind of Thyagaraja; otherwise, if it is applied to the Lord, then a proper meaning cannot be derived for the Charana.
