bhū bhāramu1 rāma bra (hmānanda)
The (human) body that does not swim in the ocean of Supreme Bliss,
is indeed a burden on the earth, O Rama!

Anupallavi

śrī nāyakākhila naigamāśrita

O Spouse of Lakshmi! The human body that does not swim in the ocean of Supreme Bliss, called the knowledge of music on which all Vedas are dependent, is indeed a burden on the earth.

Charanam

śrī viśwanātha2 śrīkānta3 vidhulu
pāvana mūrtulupāsiñca lēdā
bhāviñci rāga layādula
bhajiyiñcē4 śrī tyāgarāja nuta (ānanda)
Haven’t the Trinity - Lord Siva, Vishnu - Consort of Lakshmi and Brahma and all the holy personages dedicate themselves to music? O Lord praised by this Thyagaraja who worships Raga and Laya etc by becoming absorbed in them (Raga and Laya of Music)!

Variations

  • 1bhū bhāramu – bhūmi bhāramu - bhū bhāramē
  • 2viśwanātha – viśwanathādi
  • 4bhajiyiñcē – bhajiyiñcu

Commentary

  • * 2viśwanātha – name of Lord Siva at Kasi kshetra.
  • 3śrī kānta – In the anupallavi, the Lord is addressed as ‘śrī nāyaka’ – meaning Vishnu, in the Charana, Vishnu Himself is shown as part of Trinity. Therefore, the epithet ‘śrī nāyaka’ would indicate Narayana who is above the Trinity.
